I lived in Lisbon for about 3 years and this was my first time to see a sunrise from the heart of the city - the viewpoint called Portas do Sol - "The Sun Doors". Sounds like the best place to see the sunrise, yet so difficult to make it happen if you like to sleep, especially in the summer when the sun raises very early.

We had to wake up at around 5 am to get ready quickly and grab an Uber to Alfama - one of the oldest districts of Lisbon - which is around 25 mins ride from the house. From the Portas do Sol viewpoint you get an exeptional view overlooking the Alfama rooftops and the river Tagus - it is my most favourite viewpoint of all the ones you can find in the city (and thereare many of them!).

As the sun climed higher in the sky fairly quickly and people started to appear on the street, we moved away to another view point just behind the neighbour building - Miradouro de Santa Luzia. This one is very special too. It is located under a pergola which gets covered by the beautiful bushy bougenvilla branches in the summer, giving a shadow to a sitting area of 2 panels covered with typical Portuguese tiles - Azulejo.
